There’s character and then there’s character. We all have it. And, we are all characters of one sort or another. There are character traits that make us liked, ignored, welcomed, tolerated or not. Character has integrity, truth and honor. It can be dishonest and corrupt; lighthearted, amusing and loveable; or a combination of the above. With character you can have it going on, or have people wondering what’s going on with you. Within your group of friends are you the bad girl, good girl, comedian, diva, mouth, hater, fighter, addict, nerd, money-bags, baby momma, traveler, over-achiever, good Samaritan, get-over, scholar, homebody? Is your character real, fake or somewhere in-between?

A big part of being and feeling empowered—and digging deep into your womanifesto/womanhood—is how we see ourselves and each other. Today’s world will have us think that in order to be noticed we have to be at the top or the bottom, positive or negative, powerful or insignificant, leaders or followers, wallflowers or standouts—with nothing in-between. High or low is the name of the game, and those in the middle no longer exist. All the media attention, TV shows, magazine covers, top news stories, etc. are either about the very bad, very rich, those deemed very entertaining, and anyone who can throw shade—or are fodder for having shade thrown at them.

  • Loving The Woman You Are Today

    by Sylvia Ford-George

You dream of making a change. You want to move from the place you are and can’t wait for the next big thing to happen. Just one problem. It’s taking too long and you can’t stand it! You want the change right now! Better yet—yesterday. But life is a journey. And we need to embrace where we are until the change we’re believing in, working on, and stirring up happens. We want the accolades and the bling and the status and the things, but don’t forget to pay homage to who you are, where you are, and what you have earned right here, right now, today.

  • Bold and Comfortable

What I learned last week from Bold as a Lion week is that  bold is a state of mind. It’s like wearing a badge or brooch or superman superwoman cape, and only you determine whether it’s for good, bad, entertainment, or just plain crazy. (Think Flotus, Pink, Bey, and KeKe Wyatt.)

  • Flaws- What a Beautiful Thing

    by Sylvia Ford-George

A flaw can be a beautiful thing. Can you imagine not having any flaws at all? Being perfect from head to toe, inside and out. Flawless—mentally, physically, and emotionally…all day, every day? I’m getting tired just thinking about it! The beauty of flaws is that they build character and keep us grounded. If you’re a positive person you can find beauty in just about everything—including your flaws.

  • Ode To Music

Last week’s theme was music, and this past Saturday was Record Store Day. Record Store Day celebrates the art of music, and is an annual, international observance on the third Saturday of April. It’s the day to find very limited edition music on vinyl and CD. It was conceived by independent record store employee Chris Brown—and no, not the singer.songwriter.rapper.dancer.actor aka Rihanna’s main man. According to Brown people “were worried that the tough times in the music biz would eventually affect us. We were having our best year ever. I knew that the same thing was true all over the country…music stores…all over were selling more and more music. I felt that we all should stand together to say ‘Hey, there’s a big party going on. Music will last forever…by the way, here’s your invitation to the biggest party of the year.”

    time for spring cleaning

    by Sylvia Ford George

It’s springtime and spring is all about re-discovery. It’s fresh. It’s new. It’s rhythmic. Sunshine, blue skies, green grass, fresh air, the smell of freshly cut grass and clothes drying on the clothesline in the yard. Flowers blooming, bees humming, birds singing. Picnics, barbecues, amusement parks, boardwalks, swimming pools, road trips. Cute little dresses, skorts, shorts, flip-flops and sandals. It’s like discovering “AHA” moments every single day. Life feels lighter, brighter, and happier in the spring. Time to wash the windows and the chairs on the porch. Time for some good ole’ fashioned spring cleaning.

  • The Best Discovery Of All

you were born to be real

    by Sylvia Ford George

Being a chameleon is all about discovering who you are and what you want to be. What you want to be as a child may change when you become a teen; will blossom when you become a young woman; and morph into something bigger than yourself when you’re an adult. Every stage in life has it’s own share of exploration and discovery. The how, when and where of our upbringing is all part of the who, what and why that we become.

  • What’s Holding You Back?

    lets begin by letting go

    by Sylvia Ford-George

I’ve been thinking about that question for a week now because deep down inside I know that I set goals, prep plans, and get to that 98% complete mark, and then… BOOM!, something happens. I hold back or let go, or slow up or anything to disrupt the outcome. It’s not intentional. And for the most part no one knows but me (until now). I always want to end things on a high note and I always (eventually) cross the finish line. But the final outcome is never as great as it could have been if I had just stayed as focused and on-point that last 2% of the time, as I was the first 98.

  • A Virtual Reality

    a virtual reality

    by Sylvia Ford-George

Virtual reality lends itself to this being a different world in a lot of ways. Redefining family, friends and creating a balanced life is an important part of what we do these days 24+7+365. Smartphones, Blackberrys, Palms, touchscreens, sliders, flips, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Yelp, etc. are all part of today’s dialog. It’s like what The Jetsons had us imagining 50 years ago with their life of robots, computers, picture phones, holograms, and other “whimsical inventions”. And it’s turning out to be a blessing and a curse. Big brother is everywhere (the curse) and bad folks are getting caught (the blessing).
