Historic Beauty: Italian Vogue Goes Black

When trying to decide what was the most historic moment in beauty, we found a beautiful historic moment that came via Italian Vogue in 2008. In July 2008, Vogue went black for the very first time with an entire issue dedicated to black models. Black models often found it hard to find work in fashion, and were told their features weren’t beautiful for years. To see an entire magazine ‘go black’ had a profound impact in fashion, and led to women flocking to newsstands to shell out as much as it took to snag a copy. Jeneil got her start after she won a Caribbean model search. She then signed with New York Models and got all of our attention when she appeared in the Benetton ads.

Leslie Lawson aka “Twiggy” is an English model known for her long lashes, big eyes, and very small frame. She was nicknamed “The Face Of 1966″ by the Daily Express, and is known today as the face of the 60s. She was one of the first international supermodels although at 5’6″ tall, she was short for a model. She was criticized for promoting an “unhealthy” body size and a sad appearance.
