Styled by Culture: Music Videos From The 90s

Watching YouTube videos is a bit like jumping down the rabbit hole of the internet, it’s incredibly easy to get sucked in, clicking on the next related video and before you know, hours have gone by and you’re watching a turtle try to eat a grape, not really sure how you got there in the first place. On one rainy afternoon I found myself doing exactly that except I did have a theme. Music videos from the 90s (mostly early 2000s) and before I knew it I was obsessed all over again with Spice Girls wardrobe, wondering how Britney Spears managed to dance in any of her scantily clad outfits and realizing that Beyonce was always the star in Destiny’s Child. It’s bittersweet and a bit nostalgic to draw inspiration from pop stars and celebrities that may have been in the posters covering your walls from childhood. Whether or not they’re still making music or are completely washed up, they are never really forgotten, thanks to the magic of YouTube and their timeless music video moments in fashion.

Staring into a closet with nothing to wear is a bit like an artist staring at a blank canvas or a writer at a blank page. You feel stuck, your creativity stifled and your wardrobe dull and boring. But don’t blame your clothes, yourself or anyone else for your fashion rut, it happens to everyone. We go shopping and return from the store empty handed or with half hearted purchases. We look at the same perfect piece in our wardrobe for months and can’t seem to figure out what else to wear it with. You can call it whatever you like but it all comes down to one thing that’s missing, that beginning spark of inspiration. After all, every artist needs to muse so why should fashion be any different?
