If you are anything like me, you get bored super easily. You somehow study better when the tv is on; when you’re at work you feel trapped at your desk; and when everything is quiet and still, it seems as if your mind is racing with ideas. Its as if the world is in slow motion and you are in superfast speed?
It never seems like enough time to do what I really want to do. To this day, I don’t understand why I can’t have a job where I work until the work is done and then have the privilege to leave. What is up with the stay until 5pm thing? It’s as if I’m being paid to be held hostage, and not for my actual work. Understand how my mind works: Getting to do what is in my heart=fun. Doing what someone says I should be doing or have to do=boring.
Because the things I have to do outweigh the things I want to do at this point in my life, I find myself bored often. I fall asleep thinking how much fun it would be if my dreams came true and I was living out all the ideas that come to my head. Or if I had a day off to go jet skiing. Or the colors I would paint the house if I had enough time to organize and execute the project the way I desire. As I was meditating on how to escape the boredom of all the things I had to do, it just hit me:
You have to CREATE your way out of boredom.
At first I was confused by what that meant. How do I create myself out of my current “have-to-dos” and into my way more fun ‘want-to-dos’? The answer is by building your dream life.
We often have this idea that the dream life will just plop on our laps and then BAM our lives are changed forever. And although I do believe our lives can positively change in an instant, I also believe there are sequential moments of preparation that lead to that. Those are the moments of CREATING.
The first step in creating that life you want is knowing where you are going. What are you trying to create? If you have an image of your future self and who the person will be that gets to enjoy the freedom of the life you create, it’s a lot easier to work yourself out of the ‘have-tos’ and into the ‘want-tos’. It is all about knowing what you want and making every second count to get there. Whether your desire is to own a business or get married, there are steps that you need to take to get to that point. For a business you need a plan, a network, funds, etc. To get married you need to know your standards, what you offer, find the guy, etc.
Never get down about the down-time. Event when you are at work, you can use that ‘have -to-do’ time to propel you in the direction you want to be. Don’t just think of the end result like ‘getting married’ or ‘owning a business’, but also think of who you will be. Are you kinder than who you are now? Are you more active than you are now? Use every moment you have as an ‘audition’ for the role you wish to play. Perfect your craft.
If you are unsure of exactly what you want to do, and you know more is out there, you should start taking classes. Art, poetry, acting, boxing, business, etc. Exposing yourself to different things will narrow down exactly what it is you want to do. And most importantly, what would make you feel fulfilled.
If you are a person like me who gets bored easily and knows that there is more out there that you could be enjoying if only you had that ONE opportunity, that signifies that you know there is more out there. And if you know there is more, you will most likely get it. But in the meantime, create your way out of boredom by walking in the ordered steps that you know would lead you out of the ‘have-tos’. Opportunity will present itself to the person who is most suited to recognize its presence.
