Maybe its a little gaudy… but it truly had a point of view. Hip Hop style in the 90s spilled over into almost every genre of music, just as the sound expanded globally. It was one of the few evolutions we were able to see in our generation. To be honest…it was kind of amazing. From the craze for Tommy Hilfiger (I took no part in it) to the pleather skorts and purple wigs, Hip Hop decadence was in a world of its own. Whether you were a fan of it or not…this era gave young kids in impoverished conditions the ability to be a part of a movement, a great way of self expression, and the taste for everything lux. Something no other genre has done.
The King of Hip Hop, Biggie, took decadence to another level. Telling young kids the names of designers and showing the life and times of a rapper now lounging by the pool…everyone had a taste for decadence.
Biggie may have been the king of hip hop…but Slick Rick was the king of hip hop decadence! Only gold baby…teeth and all.
I mean, check the belt around her neck. You could now do ANYTHING when it came to style. And hip hop really showcased the limitless bounds of decadence.
Now this one…”in her Christian Lacroix”…made it so hot to be so gaudy. Many female performers are still copying her style.
Furs, leathers, and animal prints everywhere.
What was great about this era is that hip hop artists paid homage to their culture while developing a taste for the American dream.
Kelis… a fashion favorite of MM…took the style to a new level in the later years of hip hop.
And how could we wait this long before we showed you the Prince of decadence. Over the top…EVERYTHING! Pouring champagne while wearing a chinchilla and Gucci shades…how fun.
Being normal was so opposed that Flavor Flav walked around wearing clocks. I mean, you can be as normal as you want…but that’s not hip hop!
All of a sudden there was this sexy decadence that emerged with artists like Eve. It was a more subtle approach to the glitz and glam of years before.
Girls like Cassie continue the stylish approach. Check out the shoes. We love the evolution of hip hop style.
If it wasn’t for hip hop…a lot of fashion today would be…BORING! Appreciate the decadence!
