How Young Women Can Achieve The Greater Good

Posted in: Dream Building, Life, Life Architect

I was surfing through New York magazine’s online fashion blog, The Cut, and I came across an article called “The Belles of B-Ball: How NBA Wives Vie For Fashion Dominance” thinking it would be a great way to spend my last 30 minutes on the clock. I didn’t know I was going to leave my desk with a heavy heart. The article was more materialistic than any other fashion article I ever read, not really on the fault of the women. The writer felt the need to highlight every gaudy possession, focusing on everything from the size of the house to the style of their hair. What was I expecting? I was honestly expecting to read about bball wives who were venturing into the fashion industry. Instead, I learned about a dog named Gucci….

As much as we love fashion, style, and beauty- I hope my presentation of it is used so that you uplift your self confidence. By pairing the style and beauty posts with posts regarding ‘life’ and ‘inspiration’ I really hope you feel uplifted in all areas of life. Why? Because when you achieve a sense of comfort with who you are…its a lot easier to move out of your own way and focus on other people. When people lack confidence they become self-absorbed and are unable to focus on the greater good. Its important that as young women we achieve that greater good.

What Is The Greater Good?

The greater good is the sacrifice of self for the sake of other people. It’s not really that extreme of a concept, and doesn’t need to be taken to extremes. But think about this- say that all your needs are met and you have extra cash. There are people that YOU KNOW who are in the midst of hard times. Do you buy the new tv or do you supply groceries? You supply groceries so that you are able to alleviate their need. Basically, you elevate the NEED of others over your WANTS. Pretty simple.

How Can We Achieve It?

When you are more conscious of the greater good, it is a lot easier to work towards. That doesn’t mean you can’t still buy the things you love that make you feel great about yourself after you pay your bills. But what is left over can be donated to people who are close to you (if applicable) or associations that matter to you. Can you afford to buy 5 backpacks for kids going back to school? Consider it.

If we come together as young women and build a team that focuses on giving, and holding each other accountable for giving, we can have a huge impact on the world around us. Keep your friends up to date with the needs in your very own community, and find ways that you all as a collective unit can give into the lives of one another. Maybe its not money…but it can be time…prayer…an open ear.

What Are The Benefits?

Sacrificing yourself for the greater good can be a challenging process. In the beginning it may lead to fear and frustration. It can even sound like a far-off fantasy. But, if done with the right intentions, sacrificing selfish desires for the greater good can lead to a more fulling life. Wouldn’t you love to give?
